International Women’s Day: 2020 Meet Julia

As today is International Women’s Day, we thought it fitting to spend today celebrating and shining a spotlight on the women that work at Codemasters. First up today, we’re getting to know one of our localisation specialists, Julia Ramos.
Hi Julia! Could you tell us what your job is at Codemasters?
I am the Spanish Localisation Specialist at Codemasters, so I am in charge of the Spanish translations in our games.
How long have you been here at Codemasters?
I started working here one year ago, and that’s when I started working in the videogame industry.
How did you get into localisation?
I studied translation, and then I specialised in localisation and translation technologies, which led me to discovering the fun world of video game localisation.
What’s your favourite bit of your job?
I would say the versatility. As a localisation specialist, you get to work on different platforms and media, each of which has different rules and procedures, and that makes the work more dynamic. There is always something new to learn.
What are your inspirations?
Video games are another way of telling stories and creating new universes. Adapting these across languages and cultures is a challenging task, but when it’s done properly, it can be fascinating. I think that, in that way, my biggest inspiration since I was a child has always been the Pokémon universe.
What advice do you have for women trying to get into the industry?
I would tell them – either if it’s your dream or your next professional goal, go for it, no matter what. It feels good to be doing what you want to do. It can be a hard journey, so relying on other women and being supportive to each other can make things better for us and for those who want to join in the future.
